Cats are independent creatures that can be alone for many hours while we are away at work/play. However, cats require mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy. Is your cat pushing things off tabletops all the time? Yes, that is a sign of boredom as they have nothing else better to entertain themselves with. Does your cat display distructive behaviour such as tearing up your couch, etc? Yes, that is boredom too. Fret not, here are 4 ways to prevent boredom in your cat.
1. PLAY WITH YOUR CAT
Yes, the simplest way to prevent boredom in your cat is to play with him! Set aside some time each day to play with him. There is plenty of cat toys in the pet stores so pick a few different types to allow your cat to enjoy a variety of toys. Alternatively, you can DIY some simple cat toys with some strings, cardboard and whatever else you can find at home. Playing with your cat not only stimulates his senses, it also strengthens the bond between you and him.
2. FOOD PUZZLES
Making your cat work for his treats will help to keep his senses active while he tries to figure out how to get his treats. Not only it is great as a time killer, you can set it up, leave for work and let your cat work on it on his own. There are plenty of food puzzles out there but we love this one from Catit
3. CAT TV
Cat TV is a term coined by Jackson Galaxy, which is basically something that constantly stimulates the sense of a cat while a cat watches, similar to us with the television. The cat TV can be a window which allows your cat to observe the surroundings, an aquarium which the cat will spend hours watching the fishes swim (keep the fishes safe by covering the tank!) or a bird feeder outside the window for your cat to bird watch. Installing a perch or a cat tree next to the window is a great way to install a cat TV and you will notice him sitting by the window for hours daily just watching the world go by. One word of caution though, ensure that your windows are meshed or closed to prevent your cat from falling out of the window when they get fixated on the birds.
4. GET ANOTHER CAT
What is better than a cat at home? Two, of course! Getting a feline companion for your cat will ensure that your cat will never be bored. The two will eat, sleep and play together. An additional cat in the house is not much extra work, unlike a dog, so it makes purrfect sense to have two cats!
